NEO and the N3 Upgrade

NEO is a smart contract blockchain originally launched in 2016 (initially as AntShares). It positions itself as a developer-friendly platform for decentralized applications, with support for multiple programming languages including C# and Python, unlike Ethereum's Solidity-first ecosystem.

In September 2021, NEO completed its N3 upgrade, a major overhaul of the NEO blockchain. N3 introduced a new address format, improved smart contract capabilities, enhanced interoperability features, and a revamped governance model. Wallets built for legacy NEO (sometimes called NEO Legacy or NEO 2.x) are not compatible with N3 addresses and tokens.

N3 migration note: If you held NEO before September 2021, your coins were on the legacy chain. NEO provided a migration period for users to move holdings to N3. If you have not migrated, verify the current status of any legacy migration support, most exchanges completed migrations automatically for their users.

NEO and GAS: What to Know

The NEO network has two tokens:

Any wallet that supports NEO should also support GAS claim and display. Always check this before choosing a wallet.

Best NEO Wallets in 2026

NeoLine

Browser Extension

NeoLine is a browser extension wallet built specifically for the NEO N3 ecosystem. Available for Chrome and Firefox. Supports NEO, GAS, and all NEP-17 tokens on N3. Integrates with NEO-based dApps and the Flamingo DeFi platform. The primary wallet for users who interact with NEO's decentralized applications. Open-source. Well-maintained by the NEO community.

O3 Wallet

Mobile + Desktop

O3 is a multi-chain wallet with strong NEO N3 support. Available on iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac. Supports NEO, GAS, NEP-17 tokens, and NFTs on the NEO network. Also supports Ethereum and other chains, making it convenient for users who hold multiple cryptocurrencies. One of the more polished NEO wallet experiences available.

Ledger (via NeoLine)

Hardware Wallet

Ledger supports NEO N3 through the Ledger Live application and via connection to NeoLine. Private keys stored offline on the hardware device. Physical confirmation required for every transaction. The most secure option for significant NEO holdings. Recommended for long-term holders who do not need frequent access. Ensure you are using the NEO N3 app on Ledger rather than the legacy version.

Neo GUI (Official)

Desktop Application

The official NEO desktop application maintained by the NEO development team. Available for Windows. Full-featured with direct access to network functions, voting participation, and GAS claiming. More technically oriented than other options. The reference implementation for N3, though less polished than third-party alternatives. Suitable for technically confident users who want direct access to all NEO network features.

Things to Watch When Choosing a NEO Wallet

Buying and Storing NEO

NEO is listed on all major exchanges including Binance, Kraken, and Coinbase. After purchasing, withdraw to a self-custody wallet using the N3 NEO address from NeoLine or O3. Exchanges typically handle the N3/legacy distinction automatically, but always double-check the network when withdrawing.
