NEO and the N3 Upgrade
NEO is a smart contract blockchain originally launched in 2016 (initially as AntShares). It positions itself as a developer-friendly platform for decentralized applications, with support for multiple programming languages including C# and Python, unlike Ethereum's Solidity-first ecosystem.
In September 2021, NEO completed its N3 upgrade, a major overhaul of the NEO blockchain. N3 introduced a new address format, improved smart contract capabilities, enhanced interoperability features, and a revamped governance model. Wallets built for legacy NEO (sometimes called NEO Legacy or NEO 2.x) are not compatible with N3 addresses and tokens.
N3 migration note: If you held NEO before September 2021, your coins were on the legacy chain. NEO provided a migration period for users to move holdings to N3. If you have not migrated, verify the current status of any legacy migration support, most exchanges completed migrations automatically for their users.
NEO and GAS: What to Know
The NEO network has two tokens:
- NEO: The governance token. Used for voting on network decisions. NEO is indivisible, you can only hold whole NEO tokens.
- GAS: The utility token. Used to pay for smart contract execution on the NEO network. Holding NEO generates GAS over time (similar to how some proof-of-stake coins generate staking rewards).
Any wallet that supports NEO should also support GAS claim and display. Always check this before choosing a wallet.

Things to Watch When Choosing a NEO Wallet
- N3 compatibility: Ensure any wallet you use is explicitly labelled as NEO N3 compatible. Legacy wallets use a different address format.
- GAS claiming: Your wallet should allow you to claim accumulated GAS. Verify this feature before committing to a wallet.
- Official sources only: Download wallets from official GitHub repositories or official project websites. NEO ecosystem phishing wallets exist.
- Seed phrase backup: As with any cryptocurrency wallet, write down your seed phrase on paper and store it securely. N3 wallets generate a standard 12 or 24 word phrase.
